Being fat and Asian is a lot harder than it seems.
I get looks that say, “How dare you defy stereotypes! You’re Asian and fat! How is that possible?”
It’s even worse when it’s someone you love and adore who thinks you’re disgusting for being fat. That person then tells you that no, they love you, it’s just that society won’t accept me. That I’ll never get ahead in life because I’m fat.
Of course, how did I forget? There is only one standard of beauty in this society. If you don’t adhere to it then no matter what, you’ll always be a second class citizen and fail. FAIL!
I’ve got news for all of you who hate me because I’m fat – the perception of beauty is fluid and our society accepts all sorts of beauty.
Plus sized models and celebrities are more and more common. Adele is unashamedly zaftig and beautiful enough to be on the cover of Vogue. Did our society turn away from Adele just because she’s carrying a few more pounds than Lady GaGa? Aside from the out-of-touch Karl Lagerfeld, I think not.
Adele – I'd Rather be Fat!
There’s also Melissa McCarthy, one of the biggest TV stars and female comedians of the moment. She’s gorgeous, hilarious, talented, and the star of her own sitcom. If our society really hated fat people, would she have been nominated for an Academy Award? Would she have won an Emmy award?
Melissa McCarthy – Way cooler than her skinny cousin
So what if I am fat? It doesn’t make me any less of a person. It doesn’t make me any less beautiful either.
If you still think that fat people suck, get over yourself. If the world ends tomorrow, we’ll be the ones to survive the longest since our body packs much more fuel than you!

It’s good that you’re comfortable in your own skin. Most people are too self-critical. But what worries me the most when people say that they don’t care about being fat is in the long run, they will more health risks than an average sized person. While being healthy doesn’t directly translate into being skinny, there are more long term health problems when a person is fat.
It’s not just about your outer appearance; it’s also about your health, which is something that other people can’t see.
Being overweight isn’t the same thing as being unhealthy. There are fat people who run marathons, or vegan, and who don’t have health problems. Sometimes it is just a body type, not a health problem. Just like plenty of skinny people eat crappy processed food and sit on the couch all day long.
I loveee that Adele is curvy, women were made to be curvy!
but she is sooooo beautiful too!
people don’t think girls can be bigger and beautiful but she really is beautiful.
and she has lost weight and even though she has lost weight she looks better and probably feels better. I am all for curvier women definitely but if its leading to health scares that’s bad..
but Adele shows you can be curvy, beautiful, happy and healthy!
you go girl !

My own mother and sister complains that im fat!! but im just a teeny bit larger, but cos im tall, im not overweight. And im please with that..I believe in doing things to please myself and not others, cos no matter how hard you try, you can’t please everybody..and yeah, she also said that body image is important in society nowadays, but i told her, for godness sake, that does not rule out that you’ll be turn away!!! you look at people like, yeah, Adele or, my favourite singer, Kelly Clarkson, they are just abit larger in size sometimes but we still embrace them!! And the reason why i actually like Kelly Clarkson is not only because of her beautiful voice, but because she has a bunch of self-confidence and self-esteem. And I really hoped to be like her one day.
Yes I love Kelly Clarkson, too! Let’s both work on our self-confidence just like our favorite singers!
You’re amazing! I totally agree with you. I’m grateful that I have so many beautiful friends and I know so many girls who have confidence issues due to this freaking standard. I just want to emphasize the difference between curvy and healthy and just plain fat. I’m sorry to be harsh, but I was sitting across a horribly obese woman who cried I don’t care, I’m curvy and hot while eating a double cheeseburger. This I can’t accept. I applaud her confidence, I just worry that the mindset spreads. It’s unfair to some of my friends who aim to be healthy and slim which I think is great. I have a friend who isn’t a stick and much heavier despite the same height. However, she is amazingly healthy.
We both splurge on good food yet we watch what we eat during the week… I gained a lot of weight (in my opinion) while in China but because I ate awful greasy food for 8 months. I was still “skinny” but I was unhealthy. There’s so many skinny girls who eat crap and are skinny-fat– probably with more clogged up arteries (and that was probs me). I just moved to NYC so I’m not doing it atm, but I used kick-box for 2 hours a day, 3x week and have 30 min runs with the doglet. I still eat well (yes I still eat carbs and butter and cheese), splurge on fatty foods on the weekend.
It’s just that I’ve been yelled at in this city to eat more when I actually work very hard for the body I have. I guess I hate when that fact is undermined… like people assume I’m throwing up in the toilet.
So I’m at the half-way point: I applaud you if you exercise and are good on your diet, but I can’t give too much respect if you’re eating luxuriantly everyday and saying dgaf.
(and btw, karl lagerfield is an idiot)
