According to a Buy.com consumer report, in 2012, shoppers were more likely to spend on at home teeth whitening products than weight loss and shaving products. That’s not that surprising as at home kits are easier and most effective than ever.

“Dazzling white smiles from celebrity beauty Jessica Alba and actor Will Smith have pushed consumers to strive for a whiter smile,” said Bernard Luthi, Chief Marketing Officer or Rakuten Buy.com. “Affordable home whitening kits have helped to make that a reality, so much so, that they have rocketed to the number one health and beauty product in 2012.  Last year, teeth whitening kits didn’t even make the top five.”

While the e-commerce site cite celebrity endorsements and a shift in dating behavior among reasons for the raise in teeth whitening sales, I think the reason is much simpler. Today’s systems as compared to the past are proven to work more quickly and effectively. We’re a society of consumers that seek instant gratification, so if Crest comes out with a 2 hour express strip, we’re going to buy it! And since it works, we’re going to tell our friends through blogs, tweets, Facebook, YouTube, and even in person as we grin and smile at everyone!
